Oh man, where to start with this one? So, the folks who brought us Lost in Random back in 2021 — not a roguelike, let’s be clear, but they always had this sneaky feeling their wacky, dice-rolling universe was itching for something more frenetic. You know the type.
Anyway, Martin Storm — he’s the director of this fresh roguelike spin-off, Lost in Random: The Eternal Die. Got him talking to Polygon over, I dunno, some video call. Probably on a pixelated screen. And he was like, “Imagine Lost in Random as a roguelike! It was screaming for it!” Maybe it wasn’t screaming. Whispering, perhaps? But that’s the gist.
Now, this spin-off, The Eternal Die, flips the script hard. You’re donning the mask of Queen Aleksandra, who was the big baddie before. Makes sense? Eh, not to me, but here we are. Aleks and her dicey buddy – yeah, the dice talks or something – are in this wild goose chase through levels that change like my mood on a Monday morning. Stuck in some powerful artifact, they are. For real.
Then Storm says, “Dice, randomness, hello roguelite!” Started small, like a tiny nugget of an idea, but it snowballed into this full-on combat thingamajig in the Lost in Random realm. Which is cool because, you know, more gameplay and fights.
Poor Even, the heroine from the first game, had her time poking around the Kingdom of Random, but none of that meandering here in The Eternal Die. Think Hades – the game, not the god. Stuff gets intense. Story bits happen before you clash with bosses or between runs. And yeah, Storm tips his hat to Hades, basically saying Supergiant Games nailed it, bringing drama and action to a roguelike. That’s a nod if I ever saw one.
Stormteller Games is behind this — different crew but not really, ’cause half the folks worked on the original, bringing the same oddball vibes that were pure Lost in Random. He points this out like, “Keeping the essence alive!” and really, hats off to those devs.
So, what’s next for these dice-loving creators? Storm’s got his lips sealed tighter than a drum. Just a tease about adding more to The Eternal Die down the road. What, where, when? No clue. Guess we’ll wait and see, like waiting for paint to dry, but more exciting.
