Okay, so here’s the thing. Me, outside of video games? Yeah, wild, but it’s true. Don’t get me wrong, I still wear my nerd badge with pride. So I went on this crazy little trip, right? Thought I’d let you all know how things played out at one of the biggest board gaming expos. Cue dramatic music: UK Games Expo 2025. Yeah, I went there and got a firsthand glimpse into the wonderful chaos.
It all happened at the NEC in Birmingham, beginning of June. Picture it: brightest minds in board game world, all showing off their creations, sneaking in previews that aren’t even out yet. If you’re familiar with video game expos, imagine a similar scene but swap out consoles for gaming tables. Merch paradise! It took every ounce of self-restraint not to mortgage my house for all the cool stuff. Heads up, if you’re planning to visit next year – start saving. Trust me.
Anyway – or wait, no – where was I? Oh yeah, the Expo’s ginormous, spread over two main sites. NEC’s where the main stuff happens. The Buy, Sell, and Swap tent – total goldmine. You’ll find stacks of games folks didn’t quite love enough to keep. Honestly, it’s like treasure hunting without breaking the bank. Could’ve spent all weekend there, but had to move on. Priorities, right?
Saturday was kinda a split day for me. Did some shopping then hopped over to the other site at the Hilton Hotel. Ever been to a live show where comedians duke it out playing games like Werewolf Live? Absolute madness, I tell you. Went on a nostalgia trip with Knightmare Live too. Gotta talk about that show another time, it’s a whole thing. Anyway, ended my night at the Hilton’s gaming halls, digging into new finds with a nice cold beer. Ah, the sound of dice rolling is strangely soothing. Had a moment thinking how awesome it was – strangers just bonding over board games.
Sunday was NEC day again, and trust me, it’s like a wonderland for board game lovers. Eight hundred or so companies all set up, each with something cool to catch your eye. Tried a bunch of games, saw funky dice, and almost caved for a gaming table. There’s stuff for everyone, and if art or books are your thing, the Expo’s got you covered there too.
Quick tip if you’re planning on going – tickets drop around Christmas, but book your hotel ASAP. They fill up faster than you can say “roll the dice.”
If board games are your jam, this Expo’s a must-visit. It’s all about having fun and maybe making a few friends along the way. Learn from my mistake though – don’t just do two days. Go all weekend. Seriously, it starts on Friday, don’t miss out. And for folks not in the UK, the event might pop up closer to you. Worth checking out if this speaks to your inner nerd!
